The Malaysian Pet Passport (or Pet Identification Document) is an effort by the Malaysian government to establish an official Identification Document for pets in Malaysia (mainly focused on dogs, cats, and horses, although it can be extended to any other pets as well). This has been around since 2010 but was only an optional document and served no further purpose beyond recording pet Microchip numbers and pet identification.
Recently this was placed in the spotlight again as our government will start implementing pet passports as a compulsory document for any pets travelling out of Malaysia. As of the current scenario (2023), any pets travelling to New Zealand will require this pet passport to enter the country. This export requirement is expected to be enforced on the 1st of January 2024 for the export of cats and dogs to all countries. Hence, if you have plans to bring your pets travelling out of Malaysia, it is a good idea to enquire and have this passport issued for them.
What is the Malaysian Pet passport?
This is an official document for the identification of your pet which includes their details, microchip number, vaccination status, your personal information and contact as the owner of the pet (and also in lost and found cases). This document primarily allows for identification and verification during export processes.
Is this travel passport like our human passports?
This is actually an identification document more than a passport. Simply put, it does not mean with this passport alone, you can bring your pets in and out of the country freely as per our usual Malaysian passports.
This is an additional document compulsory on top of all the other documentation and processing needed for the purpose of pet exports as per current standards. This means vaccination, blood serology testing, health certification, export permit and official documentation are still required (on top of this passport) to bring your pets overseas.
How and where to get this passport issued
Pet passports can be issued and obtained via a few official channels. This includes the government DVS offices (all state offices and some district offices), and private vet clinics which are endorsed to issue pet passports.
The following Vetessential Clinics are able to issue these pet passports:
- Kota Damansara Veterinary Centre
- Putra Heights Veterinary Clinic and Surgery
- Yee Veterinary Clinic and Surgery
The complete list of clinics providing pet passport can also be obtained from the official government portal.
Is it expensive?
It is regulated that each passport will cost only RM7 but this does not include the required charges for veterinary consultation, vaccination and microchipping as needed. Kindly check with your regular vet clinic for further clarification on this.
